Fanal Forest Misty Elopement in Madeira

We still cannot get over how moody and cinematic this Fanal forest elopement was! K & V were so stylish, passionate, and we felt so much energy between them and how intentional they were. From feeling like being in a fairytale in the laurel misty forest of Fanal to dancing barefoot at the sunset at Praia de Seixal: does a better way to elope even exist?
Why Fanal Forest is a Unique Wedding and Elopement Location
Fanal forest is surely one of the best locations to elope in Madeira, and it’s for a reason! Fanal has this hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that you just don’t find in many places. On misty mornings — which happen pretty often, especially after a night of rain in the colder months — the entire forest is wrapped in a thick layer of fog. The light gets so soft and cinematic. The enchanting atmosphere makes everything feel surreal. The trees fade into the background like ghosts. Everything becomes still. It feels sacred, like nature holding its breath.
It’s also one of those elopement locations where every weather condition just works. Rain, fog, soft light, harsh sun breaking through the clouds — it all adds to the drama and story of your photos. This is why we headed to Fanal despite the rain weather forecast: we were totally sure that whatever the weather would be, we’d get the most cinematic elopement photos possible!

From taking Misty cinematic Elopement photographs to dancing in the Blue hour at Praia de Seixal, this Is How To have an intimate elopement in madeira
Some elopements don’t just look beautiful — they feel like a heartbeat.
That’s exactly how this day unfolded.
Wrapped in layers of fog and silence, K + V began their elopement deep in the mystical Fanal Forest, where ancient trees stood still like quiet witnesses. That morning, the air was literally filled with magic. They both looked fantastic: he wore a vintage coat and hat, she moved like poetry in a soft silk gown…Every touch between them was gentle, even poetic in a good way. They didn’t need a grand setup or a crowd. Just the mossy ground beneath their feet and thick and misty fog made their elopement even more private and secluded.
Later, being happy and pretty much soaked with the mist and rain, we moved down from the clouds to the Praia da Seixal. The dramatic black sand stretched endlessly beneath their bare feet as the Atlantic breathed in and out. The magic of the beach was even multiplied by the fantastic view of the waterfalls falling down from the mountain behind. All this covered with the clowds. The waves whispered. And there they were — dancing, running, kissing, wrapped up in each other — completely lost in their own rhythm.
It wasn’t just an elopement.
It was art.
It was feeling.
This is the way to elope.

Our Elopement Tips
From Elopement Photographers Who Have Been There
Prepare a Backup Plan to Catch the Magicl Fog at Fanal Forest
Want to see that misty fairytale fog? There’s no schedule for when it appears. Some mornings are clear, others you can barely see a few steps ahead. Usually, your best shot is early in the morning, especially in cooler months. We always tell couples to build in some flexibility – if these moody and foggy photos are in the wishlist, it’s better to have several attempts!
Don’t Stress About the Shoes
You’ll be walking on uneven moss, wet grass, and the occasional muddy patches. Bring footwear that you won’t mind getting dirty, even if you swap them for barefoot shots or hide them under a long dress. You’ll want to move around freely, and trust us — no one remembers the shoes in the end anyway.
Plan Your Elopement for the Weekday to Escape Crowds at Fanal
The Forest of Fanal has become more well-known lately, and weekends can bring in more hikers and tourists. It’s a big forest, so it’s not hard to find a quiet pocket — but if you want that truly still, intimate atmosphere, aim for a weekday morning. It’s quieter, slower, and honestly, way more romantic.
If you loved the photos above, you don’t want to miss the second day of K & V’s elopement with heartfelt vows at Ponta de São Lourenço!
