Eloping in Norway is THE Experience of a Lifetime

Norway’s weather can be quite changeable even within the same day. But this adds a feel of romance, adventure, and excitement to your elopement. This makes your day special and unique, fills it with good memories, smiles and hugs, drops of rain, tangled hair, or flying veil because of a sudden gust of the wind or tender snowflakes falling on your cheeks.
Of course, it’s better to check the weather forecast beforehand and dress accordingly. But if the weather changes, we know how to deal with it and get dream pictures of your beautiful elopement in a family album.

Norway is a Great Destination for an Hiking Elopement

One more thing that makes your elopement experience special is that many of Norway’s most scenic and breathtaking mountaintops are accessible only through hiking. We are telling you- this country is a true paradise for those wild hearts and adventure seekers! There are a lot of tourist attractions accessible by road or cable car, of course, but the real gems of Norway’s mountainous terrain are explored on foot.

elope in norway the Intimate and Secluded Way

Norway is incredibly unique but also remote. While popular spots like Geirangerfjord or Prekestolen can get crowded during peak season, there are plenty of quiet mountaintops and viewpoints where you can have an intimate vow elopement ceremony or even spend the whole day alone.
The mountain ranges may not be very tall, but they’re incredibly steep. Sometimes, after just a half-hour hike, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views. Plus, since you’re at sea level, hiking here is not as tiring as in the Dolomites or Iceland.

Popular Locations to Avoid for an Intimate Elopement

We don’t recommend popular destinations for wedding elopements, especially during the peak season from mid-June to August.  However, having the midnight sun and such enormous territories of national parks, picturesque fjords, and quiet Norwegian villages and towns make it possible even in summer. We’ll mention just the two, we find special and worth visiting all year round, they are Trolltunga and Preikestolen.

Trolltunga

Trolltunga or “Troll’s Tongue” in English, is a cliff that juts out from the mountain, about 700 meters above the north side of the lake Ringedalsvatnet. It’s one of Norway’s most iconic and jaw-dropping natural landmarks. Trolltunga has become a crazy popular hiking destination, that’s why we don’t recommend it.

Preikestolen

Prekestolen also known as Pulpit Rock, is another popular hiking destination in Norway, renowned for its stunning views. We really think that living in such diverse and beautiful nature, is just impossible not to love hiking. No wonder, Norwegians use every opportunity to spend time together with their families outside.
So if you want to perceive this country’s vibe of calmness, we recommend skipping it as a place for your elopement.

What is the Best Time to Elope in Norway?

Summer Elopement in Norway

Summer (June – August) is the best time to elope in Norway from our experience: all the locations are easy to reach and available, while the midnight sun gives us enough time for any elopement plans and various outdoor activities.

Fall Elopement in Norway

Fall (September – October) is our favorite season in Norway! The colors are gorgeous, the weather is still fine and there are no such crowds as during the peak season. It’s definitely a great choice for a magnificent elopement.

Winter Elopement in Norway

Winter (November – April) has its charm too. You can see majestic mountains worn in white fur, the amazing Aurora Borealis, and of course, enjoy a lot of winter sports. However, if you’re not a huge fan of cold – we definitely don’t recommend winter for eloping in Norway.

Spring (May – June) is great for intimate elopements, you can enjoy more privacy and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Prices will be much more affordable this time of the year as well.

Getting legally Married in Norway

Elope to Norway – legalities to consider

Can You Get Legally Married In Norway?

Absolutely yes! But it’s a long process that needs time and preparation. We advise hiring a local wedding planner who helps you at every stage of this process.

Can Foreigners (I.E. US Citizens) Get Married in Norway?

Yes, foreigners and Americans can get married in Norway. The requirements to get legally married in Norway can be found on the Norwegian Tax Administration website, but here’s the shortened version of it:

  1. Each of you needs to provide separate personal declarations.
  2. Statement from the sponsor, which requires two witnesses – one from each side. (The witnesses do not have to be present at the ceremony).
  3. Declaration regarding the division, if either of you have been previously married.
  4. Documentation proving your name, age, and citizenship of both parties, such as a passport or birth certificate.
  5. You must obtain a certificate from your home country, and if applicable, your most recent country of residence, confirming that there are no impediments to your marriage in Norway. This certificate must be no more than four months old, original, and either legalized or endorsed with an apostille.
  6. Non-Nordic citizens need to provide documents proving that they are legally residing in Norway.
Pro Tip: If you are intimidated by the whole bureaucratic process, we suggest tying the knot in your home country and eloping in Norway at some epic place with no hassle!
