The Couple and Their Kvernufoss Micro Wedding in the South of Iceland

We still cannot take our eyes off the GORGEOUS style Alex & Janita had on their wedding day in Iceland!
We always tell our couples you can get married whenever you want, wherever you want, with whoever you want by your side!
Absolutely everything was very beautiful & super thoroughly styled – starting from Janita’s incredible gown, and mind-blowing flower work by our one & only Thordis, and this all was accompanied by the unique nature miracles of Iceland.

From a Wedding Ceremony at Kvernufoss waterfall To Kissing at the Epic Star Wars movie location, This Is How To Get Married in Iceland the Adventurous Way

We first heard from the couple almost two years prior to their wedding day. They came up with the idea of having a beautiful Iceland elopement ceremony at the famous Kvernufoss waterfall. After Alex & Janita told us, that they wanted to have some black sand beach wedding photos, so we got some beautiful portraits of rocky cliffs and caves at Reynisfjara. The day was super magical & moody and we do think, Icelandic nature & climate fitted the whole style so dang good! Proud to admit, that these Iceland wedding photographs were featured on one of the most reputable wedding blogs online – Green Wedding Shoes.

Alex & Janita, thank you loads and loads for your trust and for hiring us as your wedding photographers! We’re so proud to be part of your beautiful love story!

“We couldn’t believe our luck when we saw they would be in Iceland on the same dates as us. We’ll be forever grateful for the most incredible job they’ve done capturing these moments, not just for us, but for everyone we love who couldn’t be there.”

Reasons to Elope or Get Married at Kvernufoss Waterfall

It’s Iceland’s Hidden Gem

Kvernufoss might not be as famous as its neighbor Skógafoss, but that’s exactly the point! Tucked away in a secluded canyon, it’s like your own private slice of waterfall magic—perfect for an intimate ceremony.

A Waterfall You Can Walk Behind

Want to feel like a character in a fantasy movie? At Kvernufoss, you can walk behind the curtain of water for that epic, out-of-this-world vibe. Imagine exchanging vows with the sound of rushing water echoing all around you. Talk about unforgettable!

Your Photos Will Break the Internet

Green moss, dramatic cliffs, and a waterfall that looks like it was stolen from a fantasy movie—your wedding pics will have your friends going, “Wait, is this even real?!?” Spoiler: It is. And it’s awesome.

Hiking Boots Meet Romance Goals

Kvernufoss is perfect for adventurous couples who don’t mind a little hike to reach the magic. Bonus: You can rock a wedding dress and hiking boots without anyone batting an eye. Talk about a power move.

Mother Nature’s Got Your Decor Covered

Who needs flower arches when you’ve got a waterfall, mossy rocks, and wildflowers doing all the work? Kvernufoss brings the drama and romance—no extra decorations required.

How to Get to Kvernufoss Waterfall: Step-by-Step

  1. Start at Skógafoss Waterfall
Kvernufoss is located just 5 minutes east of Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Use it as your starting point!
  2. Head to Skógar Museum
Drive or walk toward the Skógar Museum, which is close by. Look for signs pointing to the museum (Skógarmuseum Road).
  3. Park Your Car
There’s a small parking lot near the museum where you can leave your car. This is the closest parking area to the trailhead.
  4. Find the Trailhead
Look for a path heading into a narrow valley behind the museum. You might spot a low with a small metal gate—it’s also a part of the route, so don’t worry, it’s totally normal in Iceland!
  5. Hike to the Waterfall
Follow the trail through a beautiful canyon. It’s about a 15-minute easy walk alongside a river, with lush green scenery all around. The sound of rushing water will lead you right to Kvernufoss.
  6. Enjoy the cozy Kvernufoss!
Once you arrive, take in the beauty of the waterfall. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can walk behind it for a whole new perspective.

How much does it cost to elope or get married at Kvernufoss?

The only expense connected with getting married or eloping at Kvernufoss is the parking fee for a regular car, which is 750 ISK (around 5,5 USD). The payment can be made either at the Skogar Museum desk or via the Parka app. Other than that, it’s completely free to get married at the gorgeous Kvernufoss waterfall! I mean, can you imagine that?!
