Why Would You Want to Elope in Madeira
Madeira is the ultimate elopement playground! Imagine saying your private vows on a jet-black volcanic beach, next to a cascading waterfall, or perched on a mountain with views so stunning they feel unreal. This island is like nature’s wedding gift, offering every backdrop you could dream of.
Worried about the weather ruining your elopement experience? Not here. Madeira’s mild, sunny climate makes it perfect for outdoor ceremonies year-round. Want a little adventure? Hike, explore, or even climb to a secret spot for those elopement photos that will blow everyone’s minds.
It’s also blissfully quiet (especially in mid-season)—no crowds, just you, your love, and maybe a seagull applauding in the distance. Add the amazing local food (bolo do caco and poncha are musts!) and a bit of Madeira’s rich culture, and you’re getting a truly unforgettable elopement adventure! Oh, and did we mention it’s super budget-friendly? Paradise doesn’t have to cost a fortune!
How to Get to Madeira for your elopement?
By Air
The most convenient way to reach Madeira is by flying to Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport (FNC). The airport is well-connected, with regular direct flights from several European cities, including Lisbon, London, and Madrid. Flights are frequent and often the fastest option, making it the primary choice for most travelers.
Major airlines offering routes to Madeira include TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways, among others. Budget airlines like Wizz Air also operate flights to the island, making it accessible for various budgets.
By Cruise Ship
Madeira is a popular stop on many Atlantic and Mediterranean cruise itineraries. If you’re looking for a relaxed approach to travel, a cruise offers the chance to arrive at the island while enjoying the ocean views along the way. Cruise ships dock at the port in Funchal, Madeira’s capital, making it a smooth transition to explore the island.
By Ferry
While ferries are less common, there are occasional services connecting Madeira to the Canary Islands or mainland Portugal. This can be an option for those traveling regionally and looking for a sea route. Check for seasonal schedules, as availability can vary.
If you plan your elopement in Madeira, you definitely want to be sure you’ll arrive on time and nothing will be canceled or delayed, that’s why we recommend coming to Madeira by plane. Following that way, you may be sure that any ocean storm (especially in the monsoon season) will ruin your plans and elopement experience.

Pico do Arieiro Elopements
Pico do Arieiro is an incredible spot for a hiking elopement. Just a 30-40 minute drive from Funchal, it’s one of the island’s highest peaks, standing at 1,818 meters. Ponta de São Lourenço, at Madeira’s easternmost point, is a hidden gem for your unique celebration. The landscape here is otherworldly—think jagged cliffs, volcanic rock formations, and endless ocean stretching out on both sides. It’s less about soft, green meadows and more about dramatic, rugged beauty. Can you legally marry in Madeira?
Yes, you can! Madeira Island is a Portuguese territory and, therefore, part of the European Union. However, many foreign couples choose to legally marry in their home country before heading to Madeira for their symbolic vow ceremony and elopement adventures, after which is often a more authentic, genuine experience.
How TO Get Legally Married in Madeira
The cost of the marriage process and registry is 120€. Besides that, there are important legal requirements to get married in Madeira as a foreigner:
- Photocopies of Passports: You’ll need copies of both you and your partner’s passports. The originals must be shown to the Registrar on your wedding day.
- Birth Certificates: Both partners must provide International Birth Certificates, issued within the last six months. These can be obtained from your local registry office.
- Divorce or Death Certificates (if applicable): If either of you has been previously married, you’ll need to provide proof of divorce or a death certificate.
- Certificate of No Impediment: This document confirms that there are no legal obstacles to your marriage. It must be translated into Portuguese.
- Power of Attorney (Procuração): If necessary, you may need to grant someone legal authority to handle paperwork on your behalf.
- All documents must be certified with an Apostille Stamp to verify their authenticity.
- Documents must be translated into Portuguese, either in your home country or once you arrive in Madeira.
After your legal wedding ceremony, your marriage certificate (in electronic or paper form) will typically be issued within 2-3 business days. The price of a marriage certificate is 10€.
