The Couple and Their PLan to Have the Elopement in the Faroe Islands
When it comes to elopements in the Faroe Islands, everyone who knows us well also knows that we’re absolute fans of all Scandinavian countries, Nordic weather, mood & of course, stunning Faroese nature. That’s why the Faroe Islands were always one of the top destinations. So no joke, when Itzel and Mike first inquired and asked us to be their Faroe Islands elopement photographers, we were over the moon excited to craft their future elopement day.
Itzel and Mike, a couple from California, had always been drawn to the raw beauty of Scandinavian landscapes. At first, they considered both Faroes and Iceland elopement experiences, even thinking about a February winter session, but ultimately decided the unpredictable winter weather just wasn’t for them (remember they’re from Cali, right?!). Instead, they chose early summer, the stunning time in the Faroes when the cliffs are green, the daylight is so long, and the islands are more welcoming, settling on a June date for their elopement date.
Together with us, they envisioned a full-day experience of exploring the Faroes: hiking, laughing, and visiting iconic places like Sørvágsvatn (the “lake above the ocean”), the path to Kallur lighthouse, towering ocean cliffs, and, of course, a few hidden gems we had discovered on past explorations, which became our passion, as destination elopement photographer and videographer.
The plan was for a true adventure elopement – not just a short session, but a day that told their story, with both grand landscapes and intimate moments.
From Dramatic Cliffside Portraits to hiking to Kallaur LIGHTHOUSE, this is how TO Plan your ADVENTUROUS Elopement in the Faroe Islands
So Faroe turned out to be a truly severe and harsh destination, with cold and sharp blade winds even in June (!), pretty much rain and very low skies being on the ground level, which stole the iconic views too many times…
It all came with pros as well…First, the Faroes are unspoiled by people and everything connected with the big tourist flow. Btw, “Authentic” is probably the right word to describe these Danish islands in the middle of the Atlantic. You won’t find any sketchy tourist traps, paid parking lots, and long queues to make the photograph for your Instagram, but only real, raw, and unique nature, and only sheep and birds around.
The day was a true rollercoaster. It started with a cozy getting ready at a tiny turf black house at Saksun village, surrounded by the incredible mountains with hundreds of tiny waterfalls falling down from atop. Once we finished there, we drove to Kallur lighthouse and started hiking. Within minutes, we suddenly found ourselves covered in a thick white cloud, which didn’t go away. And this was the exact moment when our expertise in the Faroe Islands stepped in. We completely rerouted to a far less popular location, which we scouted as our plan B. And it turned out amazingly, we got stunning views with little to no hiking from where we parked our car (it was a secret spot with no parking lot). Nevertheless, this day didn’t end without a good rainfall, which made us change our clothes. But no one was sad by the end of the day: we got plenty of the wettest and most genuine elopement photographs in our cameras!
Best Time of Year to Plan an Elopement in the Faroe Islands
The most important advice while planning your Faroese elopement is definitely choosing the right season. If you’d like to have more or less predictable, mild weather during your day, you should plan for the middle of Summer through early Fall. This way, you’ll boost your chances for comfortable temperatures of around 15-20 degrees Celsius in the daytime, with not so much rain. However, even then, don’t expect Madeira weather during your elopement – you’re in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, right?!
The best time to visit is July, August, and September; however, we’ve previously photographed elopements in June and early October. However, you’ll need to be extra prepared for ferry schedule changes, and be ready to change the location in case of low clouds or nasty weather – just like it happened to Itzel and Michael.
*Pro Tip – Pack several layers to wear under your elopement dress and a suit, a good waterproof raincoat or a jacket (depending on the month you’ll choose), and really good hiking boots ( high heels are surely a no-no!) with great grip to beat the terrain.
Thinking of Planning a Faroe Islands Elopement? Here are 3 Things to Keep in Mind
1. Travel Logistics Take Extra Planning
We recommend planning booking flights, a rental car, and accommodations at least 6-12 months ahead to get the best choice and prices. Just because the Faroe Islands are remote and secluded, this makes them so special and unique, which means you’ll need to plan everything well ahead. Flights are limited, ferries and tunnels connect many of the islands, and weather can affect transportation.
2. Iconic Locations Take Effort to Reach
All the iconic jaw-dropping locations from Sørvágsvatn to the narrow ridge leading to Kallur Lighthouse require quite a bit of adventure. You definitely should be physically and mentally ready for a good hike or two. But hey, it will 100% pay off with the once-in-a-lifetime backgrounds of your elopement portraits.
3. Plan 2-3 Extra Days
The Faroes are a small archipelago, but they contain pretty much beauty. Two to four days gives you enough time to see the main highlights while also exploring hidden corners. And even if the Nordic Gods bring you a storm, you’ll be flexible to change your plans.
