Ponta de São Lourenço Elopement with Heartfelt Vows and the Epic Sunset in Madeira

K&V decided to share their elopement vows at Ponta de São Lourenço. This is the second day of their multi-day elopement in Madeira, so check out Fanal Forest and Praia do Seixal elopement photographs to get inspired. Because well…is there any better and more romantic way to promise each other than doing it at the edge of the cliff above the mighty Atlantic Ocean with no one but seagulls (and us, their elopement photographers!) being the witnesses of their love.
Ponta de São Lourenço Hearfelt Elopement Ceremony
The day began with soft sea mist hanging over the cliffs. The path ahead was raw, wild, and open. Just like them.
They walked hand in hand to the edge of the world called Madeira. Surreal orange and red volcanic-made cliffs stood above crashing waves of the Atlantic, the sky heavy with stormlight quickly approaching us…and there was no one else in sight around us. Just them, the strong fresh oceanic breeze, and the hush that falls when something sacred is about to happen.
Vows were exchanged with no altar but the ocean. As K&V stood together, wrapped in each other’s arms, and the salty air, a plane flew overhead, a single reminder of the world they had left behind for this quiet moment.
As the sun slipped beneath the clouds, the coastline lit up in golds and pinks. It was the kind of light that doesn’t last – the kind you only get once. She laughed. He held her tighter. The wind danced with her dress, and everything felt timeless.

PLan for Sunrise or Sunset
Both spots are absolutely breathtaking… and also popular. If you want that raw, quiet atmosphere (without tourists or cars in the background), aim for sunrise or golden hour. Morning light at Ponta de São Lourenço hits the cliffs in the most magical way. Guindaste? Sunset turns the ocean silver and the mountains soft and dreamy. Either way — off-peak hours = pure magic.
The Wind can be very strong (and That’s a Good Thing)
Expect wind. Lots of it. Bring layers, maybe a scarf or shawl, and embrace the drama. Light dresses, long veils, and loose hair? They’ll all come alive up there. Just make sure you’re wearing something you can actually move in and feel warm in — especially if you’ll be up there after the sun dips.
don’t overplan
Leave a little room in the day for detours — a spontaneous stop along the trail, a moment to sit and just watch the waves crash below. Some of the most beautiful moments happen when you’re not trying to create them.
