We’ve spent a day full of beautiful and sincere emotions doing the Skogafoss & Kvernufoss elopement of Junli & Kevin in the south of Iceland. Although we were surely not expecting a very bright and warm day, it happened – and yes, Iceland can be a warm place despite all the stereotypes! Keep scrolling to read about Junli & Kelvin’s Skogafoss and Kvernufoss intimate wedding and learn local elopement photographer tips when planning a waterfall elopement in Iceland.

The Couple and Their Decision to Plan Intimate Waterfall Wedding

For many couples we work with, the decision of where to elope is incredibly important. When Junli and Kelvin first contacted us with the question if we could be their photographers, they also shared the following: “We’ve traveled a lot together throughout the years, and as much as we love the cities, we’ve discovered the trips we enjoy most are the ones where we are awestruck by the beauty of this Earth. The Ocean and mountains have our hearts. I specifically remember Kelvin telling me about his desire to visit Iceland back in 2014 when we first met, yet we have never made our way there after all these years.”

After traveling around Europe, visiting Norway, and road-tripping in the Dolomites and Italy, they still were leaning towards spending their special day in Iceland.

Both Junli and Kelvin are designers and visual artists, big romantics at heart and a bit unconventional, so they were open to hiking or getting dirty to get beautiful elopement pictures. That is why we proposed them having a dreamy Skogafoss & Kvernufoss elopement. Scroll down to check out their beautiful waterfall elopement photographs!

Junli + Kelvin’s Skogafoss & Kvernufoss Elopement Day

We started the day with super intimate and slow getting ready for Junli and Kelvin. It was a big part of the day and the whole styling work, as Junly wanted to have a kinda dark, moody, and cinematic vibe to her portraits before heading outside for a vow ceremony and portraits in nature. This is why our choice was for a Skalakot Boutique Hotel – one of the very special hotels in the south of Iceland, that has a dark and moody interior delivering exactly the look we all wanted to achieve.

Remember Junly and Kelvin are super drawn to the natural landscapes and Ocean? This is why the first location we headed from the hotel was Dyrholaey – a massive cliff above the Atlantic Ocean with a stunning view of the Solheimajokull glacier and Black Sand Beach.

After a super emotional, deep, and touching vows, we headed to our main waterfall locations – magnificent Skogafoss and Kvernufoss. Kvernufoss Waterfall gave us a unique feature on such an unexpectedly warm day – a deep shadow to hide in while shooting the moody and cinematic portraits. While the Magnificent Skogafoss helped us to show the true scale of icelandic nature: vast and endless – exactly the way the couple wanted to feel looking at their elopement photographs.

Our Iceland Waterfall Wedding Planning Tips

While planning your intimate waterfall wedding in Iceland, not every season is equal. Don’t get us wrong—Skogafoss and Kvernufoss are incredible all year long, but you may not get the look and feel of the location if you choose the wrong month.

In winter, it’s sometimes pretty hard to reach the Skogafoss or Kvernufoss for your wedding pictures, because all the ground and soil around these magnificent waterfall locations are covered with thick and slippery ice.

*Pro Tip – For Skogafoss and Kvernufoss, the best time to visit and plan your wedding or elopement is usually May to October. Keep in mind that July and August are the most touristy months of the year, which means you’ll need to plan your wedding day timeline very thoroughly in collaboration with your destination elopement photographer.

One more piece of advice from an experienced wedding and elopement planner is to arrive a couple of days before your wedding day and stay for a day or two longer to allow more flexibility in case of nasty weather.

A couple of words from Junli & Kelvin

Where do I even begin? When I was searching through Pinterest and all over the web for wedding photography inspiration, I began to feel uneasy thinking I didn’t know what I wanted and nothing felt quite right. And then I stumbled upon one of Iskra’s waterfall photos and it took my breath away.

Working with Tony and Jane was so easy from the beginning. I could tell their authenticity as photographers went beyond the camera and into every part of the journey. They helped us narrow down shot ideas, locations, dates, and lodging which carried a huge load off our shoulders! I love how easy it was to talk to them and see their minds at work as they arranged our entire hotel room for the shots! Their humor, kindness, artistic eye, and encouragement during the icy waterfall shots made the day such a memorable adventure that by the end of the night, it felt like we were friends. I am forever grateful for their ability and skill to make our dream a reality. We haven’t received all the final photos yet, but the highlights that they did share with us are absolutely stunning. They captured every moment that perfectly encapsulates our love story and we’re eagerly waiting to see the final product!
There is no way anyone could ever regret working with this dream team! If I could, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat and still have the most incredible experience.

Thank you truly, from both of us <3

The only expense connected with getting married or eloping at Kvernufoss is the parking fee for a regular car, which is 750 ISK (around 5,5 USD).
