Intimate Micro Wedding in Thorsmork, Iceland: Private Vows Amid Majestic Landscapes

Kayla + Aaron
One of the things we, as their elopement photographers, loved most about Kayla and Aaron’s Thorsmork micro wedding was how relaxed and trusting they were on their wedding day in Iceland. Because of the unpredictable weather conditions in the morning, we proposed changing the ceremony location for the comfort of all the family members invited – and it turned out just amazing!
The ceremony was uniquely Icelandic, surrounded by steam and geothermal smoke in a stunning setting in the south of Iceland. Afterward, we took a short drive to the foot of a breathtaking cliff overlooking the Thorsmork Valley. It was a special place where Aaron and Kayla exchanged their private vows, with only seagulls and wind being their witnesses.

The Couple and Their Plan to have an Intimate Thorsmork Micro Wedding
When Kayla & Aaron first inquired about their micro wedding, they were sure they wanted to share their special day with their closest people. Convenience and natural beauty made Thorsmork the ideal choice. Since they planned a small ceremony with family joining them, location accessibility played an important role. “Luckily, we had chosen a great area to stay in, and Jane and Tony were quite knowledgeable regarding nearby viewpoints and shooting locations,” Aaron shared.
The timing was the second challenge for the couple, especially considering their intimate group of guests. Aaron explained, “Luckily, there is so much beauty in Iceland, you don’t have to go far for a breathtaking view.” Despite concerns about timing, everything flowed effortlessly, making their day stress-free and full of memorable moments. Without a doubt, we as their destination elopement photographers, helped them create and follow their itinerary of the day! 🙂

Getting Ready and a Ceremony Surrounded by the Loved Ones
We started the day with getting ready and doing some portraits at the pretty unique hotel called Frost & Fire. Everyone had an amazing time preparing for the day – smiling, and taking loads of pictures with their closest people. Kayla was thoroughly steaming the dress because she wanted to be 100% stunning: just look at her unique cape. After we finished photographing some of Kayla’s details, we headed to Aaron. We met him completely ready to see Kayla for the first time: he even picked some tiny Icelandic wildflowers called Brennisóley for Kayla…I mean, is there anything more touching and special to do on the wedding day?! It was one of the most memorable moments of the day for us.
Personal Touches and Unforgettable Moments
“A few come to mind. A brief adjustment early on, we got married just behind the hotel…the amount of steam that morning created a mood and beauty we could never have planned for. Additionally, the vantage point Jane & Tony found for our first location was an incredible hike with one of the best views of the week. We can still feel the wind on our faces.” Aaron and Kayla shared.
Private Vow Ceremony with Thorsmork Views
After a very emotional and warm wedding ceremony, the time for adventures started. We headed for a hike to the epic viewpoint in Thorsmork where the couple had their vowels to just each other with no witnesses. The hike wasn’t bad at all: especially considering the reward. Kayla & Aaron gasped when we reached the viewpoint. We were surrounded by epic views, low skies and stunning views at Vestmannaeyjar.
Epic Wedding Portraits with the Icelandic Waterfalls
Well, they say that if you did have any waterfall photos during your wedding day in Iceland, have you married in Iceland at all? Nah, just kidding!
After the vows, we planned to visit iconic locations of the south, such as Kvernufoss, Reyniafjara beach, and Dyrholaey, for beautiful portraits, enjoy the natural wonders such as glaciers, and of course, capture many special in-between moments of the couples’ special day. In the end, it was a true blast! Just check our these epic photos below.
Our Thorsmork Wedding & Elopement Tips
The most crucial thing to consider while planning your elopement is probably the weather. To reach most of the locations, we’ll need to use special vehicles such as super jeeps and sometimes even cross glacial rivers! In winter the weather can be especially unpredictable. This is why choosing the right season for your special day is so important!
*Pro Tip – Thorsmork, the best time to visit and plan your wedding or elopement is usually June to September. Keep in mind that although the valley of Thor (yes, it’s the god of Thunder in Icelandic Asatru mythology!) is not as touristy as most of the locations in the area, July and August are still the busiest months of the year, which means you’ll need to plan your micro wedding day timeline with us.
Last but not least is what to wear for your day. High heels are definitely a no-no! Instead, prepare good hiking boots, waterproof jackets for the summertime or good warm waterproof parkas if you’re aiming for an epic fall/winter adventure in the Icelandic highlands!
THis is how it was…
